About this Workshop

Description

Join me in this Workshop, where you will learn how to weave "cogollo," the date palm's fibers, into a ring adorned with a flower.

The fibers from the date palm tree are collected between September and March, when the trees don't have fruit.  They are commonly used in Venezuela to weave baskets, as well as make other accessories, such as hats, rings, bracelets, wallets and purses.

I started weaving cogollo as a child, when I was taught by my grandmother.  Since then, I have continued to work with this material, and have learned a variety of new techniques from local craft makers.  Today, I enjoy making jewelry and hats using the cogollo fiber.  I also teach children in our local schools the whole process, from the palm's extraction to the knit making.  I am so excited to meet you and share this part of my culture with you!

Veronica SalazarView Profile

My name is Verónica Salazar.  My father's ascendants are from a small town named San Juan Bautista in Margarita island, Venezuela, and I spent much of my childhood there with them.  I was a little girl when I learned from my grandmother how to knit the "cogollo" fibers, which are the threads that come from the date palm trees.  She taught me about love and respect for nature, and especially for the date palm trees, which are typical from San Juan.  From their fibers, many crafts are made, and so I love to call those trees "the date palm treasure" (tesoro del datilero).  Later, my neighbor (who is a craft person) taught me to make the ring with the cogollo fibers.

I love my culture and the people from San Juan.  Margarita is a beautiful place, with warm beaches, delicious food, a peaceful culture, and kind people.  I hope one day you will come visit!
