About this Workshop

Description

In this Workshop, Learners will use their creativity and imaginations to make puppets out of recycled materials.

This making concept allows children to express their creativity in either an abstract or a literal way, meaning they can construct puppets that mirror people or things they know, or they can make characters that are different, imaginative, and have no resemblance to everyday elements.

In this Workshop, Learners will have an opportunity to exercise and develop:

Sensory motor skills (hand-eye coordination)
Fine motor skills (the maneuvering of scissors in hand and other objects while building)
Imagination (inventing new ways to create things that are outside of the box, re-creating mental images, and character creation)
Knowledge of basic geometry (shapes, 2D vs 3D)
Art-making (creating objects that are either abstract or literal)
Textural learning (observing the differences in texture of various materials)
Science-environmental awareness (emphasizing the importance of taking care of our planet by not littering, and by using old materials to make new things)
Dramatic play (through the opportunity to bring their puppet to life!)

Learners may continue the foundational concepts shared in this lesson to create more puppets from home, and may further expand their ideas to invent entirely new ways to construct puppets.

I have loved making puppets ever since I was a child, and have enjoyed exploring various ways to create puppets over the years by using recycled materials, from paper bags to paper towel tubes.  As a mother, I have continued making puppets with my daughters, along with other crafting projects.  I love to see what they come up with and how they explain their creations.  My older daughter loves S.T.E.A.M. so when she makes crafts she adds an engineering element to her projects.  Just recently she made an airplane puppet!

I am so excited to meet you and make some new puppets together!

Erycka ShorterView Profile

Hi! My name is Erycka. I'm a teacher, an entrepreneur, and a mommy! I was raised in a small town with only one flashing light, called Vandalia, in Michigan. Wisconsin has been our home since 2018, and we love every bit of it. While in the classroom, I always enjoyed challenging young minds to imagine and create, because it gives you the opportunity to think outside the box. My daughters and I always have fun during Family Craft Time, and I can't wait to make new artistic memories with you. Always remember: You were born on purpose, with a purpose, and you're the only one who can do the things you do. You are special, and I can't wait to meet you!

My love for crafting began as a child, when I attended summer camps that always included a special time for arts and crafts. It was always fun, and I looked forward to what the instructor had planned for us. I've never lost my love for creating, and since then I've passed it on to my students over the years, as well as to my daughters.

My daughters and I always have at least one craft night a week. We love to bring out our box full of goodies, such as scraps, string, crayons, markers, glue, you name it, and see what new things we can create. Depending on the time of year, we also like to make Holiday specific crafts, such as Valentine's Day and Christmas themed projects.

I am excited to be offering my puppet making workshop to you! Imagination is always a fun way for children to express themselves, and what better way to do that than to create new characters! What is great is that it doesn't matter how you create and decorate them, there is total freedom of expression!
