About this Workshop

Description

This workshop will introduce you to traditional macrame and walk you through creating an amazing project: an owl. We'll use natural thread to create simple knots in an owl-shaped wall hanging while finding out more about macrame traditions in Eastern Europe.

Macrame is a very popular craft in Eastern European countries. In Romania specifically, it was typically passed from generation through generation.  Traditional macrame can be used to create decorations, from wall hanging to smaller ornaments to adorn your furniture, or for more utilitarian projects, such as handbags or grocery bags.

Macrame isn't a season-specific craft, but along with knitting it tended to be done more during colder months, especially winter. The reason was that summers, springs, and early autumn were almost entirely dedicated to caring for animals and crops.

I made my first macrame project when I was a teenager, so a few good decades ago.  I remember not having enough resources to learn more about it. I used the illustrations in books I couldn't read because they were in Russian. Thankfully, the illustrations were very detailed!

I love macrame and I feel it's not well-known outside Eastern Europe. It's relatively fast and easy to learn, and it's a great way to relax and embrace your creativity. That is why I enjoy sharing it with others, and I am so excited to share it with you.

Hi!  I’m Simona.  I'm a crafter, art teacher, proud mother, and cat lover. I've been passionate about art for my entire life and I love using my hands to create beautiful pieces of art. My preferred ways of artistic expression are traditional macrame and painting. I also enjoy being out in nature and discovering more of my country's breathtaking landscapes, which later inspires the pieces I create.

I started crafting as a child, and of all the crafts I came in contact with(knitting, crocheting, or sewing), traditional macrame spoke to me the most. Nothing inspires or relaxes me like losing myself in knots and the way they weave together to create beautiful pieces.

I use nature and traditional symbols in my pieces. Trees, birds, and flowers are prevalent in all Romanian crafts and I like working them in my designs. Traditional macrame is hugely popular in Romania and a very common pastime during winter months.

I prefer to work with natural materials. I use jute mallow for thread, and wood for other decorations, such as beads. Traditionally, macrame was done with Romanian hemp, which is a local type of hemp. It has since been replaced with jute.

Romania has a long history of myths, traditions, and artistic expression. Over the few thousand years that can be traced back, we've been exposed to many cultural and linguistic influences that led to a very unique blend of customs and to an interesting people. The landscapes are just as mesmerizing, from the mountains and pristine forests to the Black Sea and the Danube Delta.
