About this Workshop

Description

In this Workshop, Learners will explore the use of mythology in culture, and then develop and draw their own mythical creature.

Why do we make myths? Where do myths come from? What are past and modern myths? Through exploring these questions, Learners will use critical thinking skills to dive deeper into a subject and develop creative solutions. Using this knowledge, Learners will then choose a phenomena or lesson to explain by creating and drawing their own mythological creature!  We will be incorporating drawing, storytelling, creative writing, and design skills to express our ideas. By understanding what myths teach us, Learners will begin to observe more carefully their own myths and stories, as well as the world around them which created these stories.

Please note: This Workshop is recommended to ages 8+ as it requires a certain level of patience and focus.

Will ManleyView Profile

Hi there! My name is Will Manley, and I am an installation artist working in Milwaukee. I love to work with anything and everything as far as materials, and I love sharing what I know about art with others. My favorite things to do are drawing, camping, dancing and hanging out with friends! I have had some very interesting experiences, such as living as a pioneer in an 1840s cabin, getting to work in a vet clinic and meeting lots of animals, and so much more, so please be ready for a story or two! Oh, and my BFF Spike the cat might make an appearance as well! :)

In my art making, my favorite materials to work with are paint, plaster, string, projection, and lots of found objects! I also make my own candles pretty often! It's very easy to do, and I love having my own little candles in old glass yogurt or jam jars. A tradition my family has in the spring is to make May baskets-little paper cones with flowers in them.  After we make them, we go around and hang them on peoples doors on May day!

One of the things I'm still very proud of is when I helped to make a hiking trail! I was part of a nature club and we were helping out at a nature preserve. We spent weeks pulling invasive plants, relocating native plants, helping clear fallen leaves and branches, and finally hiking it for the first time!  I love living near nature and getting to go out and explore it when I want to. No matter the season, there's always something to see!

I am excited to be offering my Workshops as an opportunity to have a creative outlet for the making spirit that we all have in us. Making things is very human, and our hands are drawn to it, so why not get creative!
