About this Workshop Description In this Workshop, we will learn about the Tanabata festival that is celebrated every year in Japan. Tanabata is based on a legend and has a history of over 700 years. The celebration is considered to be a magical night when dreams come true! Learners will make the decoration that is used for the celebration, and include their own wishes in their creation. Tanabata is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, which is July 7th in the modern calendar. Some places in Japan celebrate Tanabata in August in accordance with the older Chinese calendar, which is where the legend originated. Tanabata is celebrated to commemorate the romantic story of two lovers represented by the stars Vega (Orihime) and Altair (Hikoboshi), who are only allowed to meet each other once a year, as long as the skies are clear. The annual reunion of the star-crossed lovers is celebrated in rather big fashion. Japanese people use this event not only to praise the two stars, but also to send their very own wishes towards the heavens. One of the most famous customs of Tanabata Festival is the writing of said wishes on small strips of paper called Tanzaku, which are then pinned or hung on bamboo decorations. There are, in fact, a variety of paperwork decorations used to make this day colorful. Please note: This Workshop is recommended to ages 6+ with parents helping hands.

Meet the Instructor Angela NishizawaView Profile I was born and raised in Colombia, and I moved to Japan over 6 years ago. What I love about both of these cultures is that you are always surrounded by colors, creativity, festivities, and happiness. Since I was little I enjoyed making crafts, especially to give as a gift for my family and friends. I loved using stationary, stickers, and colored papers as materials to create with. When I came to Japan, I naturally became interested in origami. Origami has been a tradition in Japan since ancient times, and many of the celebrations have a handcraft that you can make to go along with it. In my Workshops I am excited to share some of these celebrations with you!
