Costa Rican Cabuya Fiber Bracelet

Join this Workshop to learn the ancient craft of Macrame, brought to America by Spanish settlers hundreds of years ago, during colonial times. 

In our Workshop, we will craft a beautiful macrame bracelet, using a natural fiber called cabuya, which comes from the cabuya plant.  It is extracted in the plush Costa Rican mountainside and then worked by hand to result in the fiber we will use in our Workshop.  In our country, there is only one person who still has this knowledge - he is a dedicated eighty year old master who works tirelessly to preserve our Cabuya Macrame tradition: the one and only Don Martina. 

During our Workshop, you will learn the “knot technique,” some interesting facts about the history of Costa Rica, and perhaps even some words in Spanish.  Best of all, you will have a cabuya fiber macrame bracelet, to be worn proudly around your wrist or ankle.

If you have ever made a bracelet out of thread or have wanted to, then this Workshop will be great for you!  Working with cabuya is easy and fun as the fiber wants to hold its shape.  Children under 10 would do best if they have an adult participate with them.
