About this Workshop

Description

Join me as we explore the doll making traditions of Slavic culture.

A tradition of doll making is actually something you can find in all parts of the world.  People used to make dolls out of any materials available. You can find dolls made of wood, wool, straw, and textiles, etc.  In Slavic culture, we have our own kinds of dolls, and the ones I like best are rag dolls.

Traditionally, these dolls were made of old clothes, linen, wool, cottonwool, and threads.  Dolls were made for kids to play with, to decorate the house, to make a wish, to protect her owner from bad energies, and to bring good energies and luck.  They can be a great present for someone you care about.

These kinds of dolls have been a part of Slavic culture for many years.  My grandmother has said that people made these dolls as far back as when she was a little girl.  I made my first rag talisman doll about five years ago. It was a Money Lady - a doll for prosperity.

In our workshop you will make your very own lovely little angel doll.  Children under the age of 10 would likely benefit from having an adult or older sibling participate along with them.  Making the doll requires the ability to tie a knot, or having a helper who can tie a knot.

Hi! I am Tanya. I live on a farm in Latvia.  What I love most about living on a farm is the fresh air I can breathe, the meadows I can walk, the goats I can raise, and the garden I tend to.  I also get to swim in my own pond, walk in my forest, and watch flowers growing.

In my art, I enjoy working with many different materials.  When I was a child, I used to like designing postcards. I used to felt (which means to make things out of felt) jewelry and shoes.  I've also learned how to make beeswax candles and textile dolls, and in the process, cotton and beeswax have become my favorite materials to work with.

We loved our session with Tanya!

by Grace on

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our workshop learning to make Latvian Angel Dolls. Tanya was very patient with us and gave us such an amazing background on the history of the dolls, why and how they were made. She spoke to us about living in Latvia and moving to the farm and how we were on different time zones. The dolls were the perfect degree of difficulty for my daughter and it was a fun experience to do together. When Tanya asked if we had any questions at the end, my 8 year old daughter asked if she could meet Tanya's 8 year old daughter. The two were able to meet virtually and it was a really sweet mother/daughter pair experience. She certainly did not need to allow us to meet her daughter, but it really made a wonderful impression on both my daughter and I.
